“Balloons make me very happy. Do they make you happy?”
-Winnie the Pooh in movie Christopher Robin
This is fast becoming one of my favorite movies. Winnie-the-Pooh reminds us of the sweet innocent moments of life. The joy of a balloon, a magical colored orb that floats on a string. Everyone can have one, but not everyone will enjoy it as much as Pooh. What is your magical balloon? Something you can see, taste, or touch? Some little thing that lifts your spirits and makes you feel young again.
Nowadays there are so many Heffalumps and Woozles that try to take away our happiness. But we can choose—we can choose our focus. Pooh was a “silly old bear” and sometimes a little silly is just what’s needed. Among the silly there was always some wisdom.
I get emotional during the song “Return to Pooh Corner,” by Kenny Loggins. Sometimes I desperately want to return there—to my very worn copy of Winnie-the-Pooh, to my backyard sycamore tree, to my safe, happy, creative space. To the Hundred Acre Woods where all children and their friends play happily together.
So yes, balloons make me happy! Cotton candy makes me happy, Lindor chocolate makes me happy, or better still—I choose happiness. And since it’s my choice—I choose to focus on the joy! Even when it’s very hard. Heffalumps and Woozles do your worst.
