Vaudois Alps in Northern Italy/Southern Switzerland
In Part Two of Echoes on the Rock, the Reynaud family and the Waldensian community have joined the Calvinist Reformed faith. They have stepped out of hiding, and temples dot the landscape where they worship. The group is a bigger target for those who disagree with them.
John Reynaud hopes for peace like his father. He watches as the Duke of Savoy and his commanders break promise after promise to his people. Marianne is jolted from her sleep by marauders who terrorize the villagers, killing some and chasing them from their homes in the freezing snow. She vows to fight back. Barbe Martin Tachard, leads a resistance against the constant persecution. At the same time, Lord Truchietti does all he can to rid the valleys of the pestilent Waldensians, who cannot continue defying the Duke.
Once again, the differences cannot be overcome, and fighting breaks out. As we revisit history, I hope we will come away with a renewed desire to understand each other and see our different beliefs or religions as learning opportunities. We can disagree but also love our neighbor.
